Holy Spirit

Annandale, Virginia

McCrery Architects designed a series of improvements that brought new life to Holy Spirit Catholic Church’s original dark and dimly-lit brick-walled interior, built in 1965.  The new cream-colored marble sanctuary floor reflects light from new pendant light fixtures in the sanctuary, greatly improving the quality of light in the church interior.  A mosaic image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the focal point of the new Altar of Sacrifice.

Following the renovations of the church’s sanctuary, construction of a new narthex entry to the church began in early 2021.  The narthex building will both beautify the public face of the church – making it more church-like – and give new spaces for this large parish, including a new parish hall, baptistery, and meeting rooms for parish groups.  The simple symmetrical red brick pavilion-like composition, centered on the lantern-like cupola over the narthex, honors the building traditions of Virginia while being distinctly Catholic in its architecture.

The new narthex was completed in mid 2022.
